CLARENCE LIDO
Brief description of fishery:
There is restricted fishing times on the Lido. See gallery for further information on fishing times and restrictions.
The Lido is a member only water to fish. It is situated on the back left hand side of Clarence Park, off Walmersley Road, Walmersley, Bury. There is a large carpark next to the lake with steps in the middle and slopes to either end of the carpark to help access the lake for the disabled and anglers with barrows/trollies.
Almost all pegs are wheel chair friendly and some have an extra metal bar in front of them to help. We do also have access to a disabled toilet on site (only when the club house is open).
In 2014 we secured the water from Bury Council. The water was almost fully drained and refurbished helping us make an island in the middle of the lake and our stocks of fish were put back in the lake, These comprising of Gudgeon, Ruff, Hybrids, Roach, Perch, Tench, Skimmers, Bream, Common, leather and Mirror Carp.
In 2016 we had our classroom built on site and we now use this water as our home for our coaching programmes. On each Thursday we have our Disabled and Well Being group in the morning sessions and our Juniors at an evening session. Through the coaching we conduct, we normally utilise half of the lake, The area’s of the lake are indicated on a map outside the classroom. We do this to keep everybody together so they can all learn from each other and instil new friendships. Members normally fish on the opposite side of the lake on a Thursday and fully understand the coaching ethos of the club.
The lake is routinely maintained by the committee and members of the club and we have added tarmac footpaths around the lake including specific pegs made in tarmac. We have added floating islands which are great for holding stocks of fish, We have added brush wood to the sides of the lake to help with breeding. We have also created an area known as the paddling pool where there is NO FISHING in this area and is has been designed for a safe place for fish to breed. It’s wonderful to walk past in summer and see the fish swimming around in it.
Once you’ve fished the Lido and had a good pull from the resident carp you’ll be back for more. Though summer it gets very busy on there.
Bait – Most things work. Corn, Maggots, Pinkies, Worm, Caster, Pellets, Bollies. Bread. Paste. Ground Bait really brings in the carp along with Garlic Hemp seed.
There are decent sizes of fish in the lake with Bream up to 9lb, Tench to 9lb, Perch to 2.5lb and Gudgeon particularly large
In 2017 we stocked the lake with lots Tench of around 6-8 oz.
We did a netting of the lake in 2021 and it wasn’t a good result only having 17 Tench and 1 Carp. We knew we had lots of silvers in there and a few more Carp than that. But never the less we then decided to stock the lake again.
In 2022 we did a stocking of Carp between 3–5lb
In 2023 we did another stocking of Carp between 1-3lb.
In 2024 we did a stocking of Skimmers and Tench from 8oz.
Coaching on the Lido normally takes place through spring and summer, April to October times. The coaching from aged 5 yrs upwards is very popular and your sessions will have to be booked, This is normally a slot every Thursday night 5:30pm – 7:30pm for 5 weeks. We charge £3.00 per session which covers all the tackle and bait you need, along with qualified coaches on hand to help with advice, tactics and hopefully catch you some fish.
If you enjoy it after 5 weeks which most people do you can advance to the next group and continue coming on a Thursday night learning different ways to fish.
Our coaching programmes are one of the best and are recognised throughout the UK fishing scene. We have had beginners come through our coaching programme and within a few years are becoming sponsored anglers for top fishing brands and representing England fishing in team events around the world.
